Preserving history at the federal courthouse in Indianapolis often comes with vow that it will happen rain or shine.

Court officials kept their promise Tuesday, despite fast-moving thunderstorms that slammed the city with lashing rain, hail, and fierce winds, and they battled the wet weather and darkened sky to place a time capsule outside the U.S. District Court, Southern District in Indianapolis. Dozens gathered for the 4 p.m. ceremony, crowding inside the courthouse ;s front hallway as the storms unleashed lashing rain and hail.

“Thanks for coming out for this short, stormy ceremony,” said Jim Strain of the Court Historical Society, with thunder rumbling in the background.

The capsule was placed in the stone located on the southeast corner of the Birch Bayh Federal Building, 46 E. Ohio St. Contents include court-related newspaper articles, photographs from inside and outside, surveys from past and current employees, photos of current judges and U.S. marshals, souvenirs from earlier courthouse events, procedural and substantive legal rules, and a court clerk diary.
