The state’s first African-American federal judge will be formally sworn in Friday afternoon at the United States Courthouse in Indianapolis.
U.S. District Judge Tanya Walton Pratt of the Southern District of Indiana was nominated to the bench in January and confirmed by the U.S. Senate in June to fill the vacancy left by the elevation of Judge David Hamilton to the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals. Before becoming a federal judge, she was a Marion Superior judge for 13 years and worked in private practice.
The ceremony begins at 2 p.m. in the William E. Steckler Ceremonial Courtroom, Room 202, of the Birch Bayh Federal Building and United States Courthouse, 46 East Ohio St. It’s open to the public, but seating is limited.
