McKinney School of Law Dean Gary Roberts will retire as dean June 30, 2013, Indiana University Purdue University-Indianapolis announced Tuesday. He will remain on the law school faculty after he steps down as dean.
Roberts came to Indianapolis in July 2007 from a 24-year tenure at Tulane University Law School. Roberts is a national expert in sports law and has published several articles and book chapters on antitrust, labor and other issues in the sports industry.
While dean, the school received a $24 million gift from Indianapolis attorney Bob McKinney, which led to the renaming of the school in 2011.
Roberts has also helped grow international partnerships with the law school in China and Egypt and has overseen the doubling of the student financial aid budget.
“Gary Roberts assumed leadership of a financially sound school and further strengthened it through his energy, determination and work ethic,” IUPUI Chancellor Charles Bantz said. “Gary’s efforts have raised awareness of the vital contributions the McKinney School’s graduates continue to make, especially in Indiana, and he will leave the school well positioned to confront the challenges facing legal education in the future.”
The search for Roberts’ successor will begin immediately.
