Members overwhelmingly voted that the judges should be retained.
None of the four judges up for retention Nov. 4 – Chief Justice Loretta Rush, Justice Mark Massa, Court of Appeals Judge Rudolph Pyle III and Tax Judge Martha Wentworth – received less than an 80 percent approval rate.
These four are up for retention by voters for the first time. Appellate court judges face an approval vote in the first general election that occurs at least two years after their appointment. Judges are up for retention every 10 years after that.
Members were surveyed electronically and asked to vote “yes” or “no” to retaining the judges. The ISBA reports that 1,143 ballots were cast of the 9,753 members polled. The results are available on the state bar’s website.
“While by no means a scientific survey, the lawyers who responded spoke strongly in favor of the retention of all four jurists. There should be no doubt that each deserves to remain on the bench,” outgoing president Jim Dimos said.
