Gleaners Food Bank of Indiana works to feed the hungry across the state, and on Oct. 21, Indianapolis Bar Foundation Distinguished Fellows pitched in to help them do just that during the Fellows service event. While Gleaners serves 21 counties in central and southeast Indiana, their main food bank is located in Indianapolis, which is where the Fellows worked.
The Fellows and their family members wer divided into two groups, inspectors and sorters. The inspectors went through boxes of merchandise that had been returned to Walmart or that had been damaged upon original delivery and could not be sold, removing return labels, and taping up ripped or ruined packaging. The items then went into crates and were sent along to the sorters, who put the items into specific areas for distribution to the clients of Gleaners. Items included toys, articles of clothing, household items and diapers.
At the end of the two-and-a-half-hour service project, the Fellows learned they had processed 2,580 pounds of merchandise.
