Larry Bucshon.
According to the final tally of votes in southwest Indiana’s Eighth Congressional District, Sullivan native Ron Drake, a Washington, D.C., attorney and former state representative, led Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law professor David Orentlicher of Terre Haute by 68 votes. More than 58,000 votes were cast in the 19 counties comprising the district, and Orentlicher requested a recount May 17.
“At this point the commission has ordered a recount and will direct the work to coordinate schedules to determine when and where the recount will be in the 19 counties in the Eighth,” said Angela Nussmeyer, co-director of the Indiana Election Division of the Secretary of State’s office.
The recount will be conducted by the Indiana State Board of Accounts, and each candidate is entitled to a representative to witness the recount in each county, Nussmeyer said. While there is no deadline for the recount, a list of candidates for the November general election must be certified by late August.
Indiana’s Eighth Congressional District includes the cities of Evansville, Terre Haute, Vincennes and Jasper and covers the counties of Clay, Crawford, Daviess, Dubois, Gibson, Greene, Knox, Martin, Owen, Parke, Perry, Pike, Posey, Spencer, Sullivan, Vanderburgh, Vermillion, Vigo and Warrick.
