The last few weeks have been a flurry of activity at the IndyBar as we finish out an amazing year and turn our focus to 2018. We started Thanksgiving week with the IndyBar’s Recognition Breakfast, where we applauded the efforts of several of our members to improve our legal system and our local bar.
At the breakfast, we celebrated the appointment of Magistrate Judge Tim A. Baker of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana to the Board of Directors of the Federal Judicial Center. Magistrate Baker was nominated by United States Supreme Court Chief Justice John G. Roberts in recognition of Magistrate Baker’s “exemplary and unwavering” commitment to judicial education.
We also honored the IndyBar Bar Exam Improvement Task Force, a collaborative effort of the IndyBar, the Indiana State Bar Association and the Marion County Bar Association, that included an 18-month study and comprehensive recommendations regarding our bar examination and how to best assess competency to be admitted to practice law in the State of Indiana. This Task Force was Co-Chaired by the Honorable Jane Magnus-Stinson of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Indiana and John Maley of Barnes & Thornburg, LLP.
We also recognized the IndyBar’s Membership Value Task Force, led by Reynold Berry at Rubin & Levin, PC, for their efforts in designing an innovative new dues structure for IndyBar members, honored our IndyBar Young Lawyer of the Year, Julie Mohamed of Calumet Specialty Products Partners LP, and thanked all of our new Indianapolis Bar Foundation fellows and life fellows. Each of these honorees has in some way helped us to fulfill the IndyBar’s mission to serve our members, promote justice and enhance the legal profession.
While recognizing some of the great accomplishments of our members in 2017, we also have been diligently planning for next year. Our 2018 Board of Directors and section, division and committee chairs spent a few days in French Lick getting acquainted and planning for the upcoming year at IndyBar on November 16 and 17. James Bell, our 2018 President, facilitated our leadership retreat and challenged all of us to commit to a year of hard work and FUN! It also will be a year of change for the IndyBar, as we implement a unique dues structure, launch a new tool kit for starting and maintaining a law practice, and identify and design the IndyBar’s future home.
With all these changes, the IndyBar’s staff and leadership continue our efforts to maximize the value of the services and opportunities provided to our members. We hope you are excited about these upcoming changes and encourage you to provide us with feedback as we continually strive to enhance the IndyBar membership experience.
As this year comes to a close, don’t miss out on the IndyBar’s year-end activities. In the month of December alone, we are offering more than 100 hours of live and video replay CLE programming. So, whether you want to attend a live CLE, watch a video replay or participate in an online CLE, we have something for you as you work to fulfill your annual CLE requirements.
