Subscriber Benefit
As a subscriber you can listen to articles at work, in the car, or while you work out. Subscribe NowPro bono service is a rewarding—and expected—component of the practice of law. With reporting requirements now in place, the need to find opportunities that fit varied schedules, practice areas and interests is greater than ever.
Volunteers are now being sought for two IndyBar pro bono programs that allow members to dedicate just an hour or two to helping the community. Check out details below and contact Arnetta Scruggs at [email protected] for more information.
Ask a Lawyer
Small time commitment, big impact—answer legal questions from the public at the IndyBar’s Ask a Lawyer program, coming up on Tuesday, April 10. This face-to-face advice program will be held at 11 locations throughout the city from 1 to 5 p.m.
Volunteers take on just one two-hour shift and are provided with a resource guide to help in assisting the public with questions on divorce, guardianship, child custody, child support, landlord/tenant issues, bankruptcy, personal injury, criminal law, employment law and more. Both attorney and paralegal volunteers are needed, and law students are encouraged to shadow attorneys during the event.
Free Wills Clinic
Low-income individuals are likelier to die younger and without wills or advance directives in place. The IndyBar Free Wills Clinic seeks to assist this population so that end-of-life decisions—especially those affecting children—are clear.
The next Free Wills Clinic will be held April 24, 2018 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the John H. Boner Community Center and the Haughville Public Library. Attorneys, paralegals and law students are needed as volunteers to do intake, conduct private legal consultations with qualified applicants, draft paperwork and witness document signing. Estate planning attorneys are needed but non-probate-savvy attorneys will also be put to good use. Have a notary license? You’re needed too!
Attorneys who cannot volunteer on April 24 may be needed for overflow representation following the event.•
