The state public defender represents indigent incarcerated inmates in challenges to convictions and sentences under Indiana Post-Conviction Rule 1 and is appointed by the Supreme Court pursuant to Indiana Code chapter 33-40-1. Indiana’s current public defender, Stephen Owens, is retiring in December.
Applicants, who must be a resident of Indiana, must also be an attorney in good standing and have practiced in Indiana for at least three years. The appointed defender serves a four-year term.
Annual salary for the position is $120,578.64, and most state benefits apply.
