As a subscriber you can listen to articles at work, in the car, or while you work out. Subscribe NowMobile sports betting will officially launch in Indiana on Oct. 3, enabling Hoosiers to wager through their phones or computers without ever visiting a casino.
The Indiana Gaming Commission has approved the mobile launch for the first operator, French Lick Casino, which is working with Chicago-based Rush Street Interactive to offer retail and online sports wagering.
A state law passed earlier this year legalized sports gambling for those ages 21 and older as of Sept. 1, making Indiana the 12th state in the country to allow sports betting. French Lick opened its retail sportsbook Sept. 6.
Initially, sports bets could only be placed in person at casinos and off-track betting facilities as casinos worked to create the online sportsbooks. Nearly all of Indiana’s casinos and OTBs have been approved for in-person betting and have started operating retail sportsbooks. Most are expected to eventually offer mobile gambling, as well.
With the mobile option, Hoosiers will not have to register in-person before placing bets. Geo-fencing technology ensures anyone placing a bet on their smartphone or computer is within Indiana’s borders.
Indiana will be the seventh state to offer online sports betting.
Hoosiers can wager on dozens of professional, collegiate and international sporting events, including football, basketball, baseball, auto racing, hockey, soccer, boxing, golf and Olympic competitions. Betting on high school or youth sports, along with e-sports, is prohibited.
Rush Street Interactive also operates online sportsbooks in Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
