The Allen Superior Court Judicial Nominating Commission has begun the process of selecting a new judge to fill a vacancy to the Allen Superior Court bench that will occur this summer.

Commission members are seeking a judicial officer to succeed Judge Nancy Eshcoff Boyer when she retires from her position in the Civil Division in June. Boyer, who announced her retirement last month after nearly 30 years of service, served as Allen County’s first female judge. She was appointed to the bench in 1991 by former Gov. Evan Bayh, elected to her first full term in 1992 and re-elected in 1998, 2004, 2010 and 2016. Boyer’s successor will complete the remainder of the judge’s current term, which ends Dec. 31, 2022.

Indiana Supreme Court Justice and commission chair Steven David announced applications for the position are now available online. Applications must be submitted through the Indiana Courts Portal by 4:30 p.m. EDT March 10.

The commission is expected to convene to interview applicants at 9 a.m. April 8 and 9, if needed. Interviews will take place in Courtroom 110 in the Allen County Courthouse, 715 S. Calhoun St., Fort Wayne.

Established in 1983, the commission is required by state law to submit to Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb “the three most highly qualified candidates from among all those eligible” for appointment when a vacancy arises. Holcomb then has 60 days after formal notification of the finalists to appoint one of them to the bench.
