Witte’s last day leading the Indiana Supreme Court Disciplinary Commission will be in February. He joined the commission in 2010, replacing lawyer Donald Lundberg, who had served as executive secretary for 18 years.
Prior to joining the commission, Witte was the first Asian-American in the Indiana judiciary, serving as a judge in Dearborn and Wayne County trial courts. Also, he chaired the Judicial Division of the American Bar Association and was co-chair of its Standing Committee on Minorities in the Judiciary.
During his tenure at the Disciplinary Commission, Witte oversaw the launch of an ethical guidance program that provides lawyers with written opinions on ethical questions as well as informal one-on-one guidance.
“The result is an avenue for Indiana’s bar to stay well informed,” Indiana Chief Justice Loretta Rush said in a Tuesday statement. “The Court wishes him all the best in his retirement and future service.”
Witte earned a bachelor’s degree from Indiana University and a J.D. from IU Robert H. McKinney School of Law. He was admitted to the Indiana bar in October 1982.
Within the legal profession, Witte is active in the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association, which gave him its highest honor. In 2017, the Indiana chapter of NAPABA awarded him its inaugural Trailblazer Award.
