The Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Council and prosecutors across the state are mourning the death of Whitley County prosecutor John W. Whiteleather, Jr., who died on March 12 at the age of 83.
Whiteleather, a native of Whitley County, was elected as a prosecutor in 1970 and served in various roles, including acting as president of the Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys Association and chairman of the Prosecuting Attorneys Council.
In 2019, Whiteleather was given the Indiana Bar Foundation Legendary Lawyer award after serving at least 50 years in the practice.
Attorneys are chosen based on their “adherence to the highest principals of the legal profession and compassion through service to their community.”
In 2002, Whiteleather received the Shine Feller Award, now known as the Powell-Feller Award, the highest honor given by the Association of Indiana Prosecuting Attorneys, Inc.
“IPAC and all Indiana prosecutors mourn the loss of John Whiteleather and celebrate his many accomplishments and contributions to public safety,” said Chris Naylor, executive director of IPAC in a news release. “John was a great leader, a tremendous litigator, and a kind man with a great sense of humor. He was a positive influence on a whole generation of prosecutors statewide and leaves fond memories for all who knew him.”
