Law firms still have offices near the old courthouse. We walked to court daily, interacting with other lawyers, judges and court staff. I treasured those moments and miss them dearly.
Tragically, the new courthouse functions as an institution moved to another county. No law offices or places to eat are nearby. On top of that, the gigantic parking lot resembles something you experience at the airport. This move never made sense by any definition.
And now those of us with decades of experience in and around the City-County Building have to say goodbye to the City Market. It is now closed. Many of us used it as a social gathering as we had lunch there several days a week. Defense lawyers and prosecutors interacted where we laughed as we made fun of each other.
But now all of that is gone. Thanks to our mayor, friends have become strangers. Downtown, a former oasis, has become a wasteland.
My hope is that young people can reinvent the past in the new courthouse. My many trips to downtown bars and restaurants as the work day ended remain a part of Indy history.
Can it be recreated? Let’s hope!•
