It may not quite feel like fall in Indiana yet, but September 22 is not too far off. Which means September 27 is not either. And if you are looking for something fun to do on a Friday morning, volunteer for IndyBar’s Annual Day of Service at Gleaners Food Bank. Bring your mask (if you want), your closed-toed shoes (those are required) and join us from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. for a production/assembly shift. We will be responsible for building boxes on the assembly lines; scanning, sorting, and inspecting donated food items; and bagging bulk food donations. There will be a little lifting, some bending, and a lot of standing throughout the shift. If you need accommodations, you can let Gleaners know before you sign up. Otherwise, we will get on-site training that morning, then dive into the work.
The Day of Service has historically focused on such activities as cleaning up outdoor spaces for Indy Parks, supporting the Girl Scouts of Central Indiana at Camp Dellwood, and volunteering at Gleaners. Gleaners, in particular, is entering its fifth decade as an organization committed to ensuring no Hoosiers go hungry. To accomplish this, it relies heavily on volunteers to help achieve its goals. One hour alone of volunteer work helps to provide 233 meals to members of our community.
Importantly, Gleaners’ work in Indianapolis being “accountable stewards of the resources entrusted to us” aligns closely with the efforts of the IndyBar’s Professionalism Committee in advancing its mission of “working to improve public confidence and trust in lawyers through activities that promote positive lawyer images in the community and education members and the public on how to avoid circumstances that can lead to client distrust and dissatisfaction.” This mission is further outlined in the Standards of Professionalism that guide the work of the Professionalism Committee, namely Commitment, Character, Competence, Courtesy, and Community involvement.

Todd. S. Shumaker is a partner at Church Church Hittle + Antrim. His practice focuses primarily on higher education and includes representing clients in NCAA regulator matters such as waivers and infractions, as well as Title IX gender equity reviews and sexual harassment investigations. Before joining CCHA, Shumaker spent nearly eight years with the enforcement staff at the NCAA where he led diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts and was chair of the Enforcement Inclusion Guiding Team and was a member of the LGBTA-A+ Employee Engagement Group leadership team. Prior to his time at the NCAA, Shumaker spent seven years with the Indiana Office of the Inspector General and State Ethics Commission as an attorney and Chief Compliance Officer. He received his undergraduate degree from Taylor University and his J.D. from the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law. He also holds a master’s degree from Butler University. Shumaker is an active IndyBar member, serving as chair of the Professionalism Committee and as a member of the Sports and Entertainment Law Executive Committee.
