Why did you decide to enter the legal profession?

I became a lawyer because I wanted to be able to influence strategic decisions and learn transferrable skills (writing, advocacy, critical thinking) that will simultaneously benefit my professional career and my personal ambition to positively impact the lives of others.

What does “diversity, equity and inclusion” mean to you?

Diversity, equity and inclusion mean everyone’s ideas and perspectives are sought after, welcomed and respected. Everyone should be comfortable presenting their authentic self without feeling the need to hide or dim aspects of their life or personality unnecessarily.

Why is DEI important to the legal profession?

In the law firm environment, diversity in the legal profession helps the legal professional recruit and retain other diverse lawyers who feel empowered and supported. Diverse talent expands the potential client base and helps develop unique solutions and perspectives to client concerns.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

Even if no one in the room looks like you, remember that you are exactly where you are meant to be. You belong in the room, at the table, and in the position you’re in just as much as everyone else.

What advice would you give to young attorneys?

Being an attorney isn’t easy, but it’s worth it. The skills you learn as an attorney (writing, distilling complex information, critical thinking) transition to every other aspect of your life.

How do you spend your free time?

Traveling, watching true crime shows and documentaries, and spending time with family and friends.

What is the most significant change you’ve seen in the legal profession since you began your career?

The expectations around the use of social media to build and support your professional profile.

What was your favorite – and least favorite – class in law school?

Favorite class was Law & Social Change. Least favorite was Criminal Law.

Why has DEI become so controversial?

DEI has become controversial because it’s politicized in a manner such that its history and goals are profoundly misunderstood by some.
