It’s been said the diversity is having a seat at the table, inclusion is having a voice, and belonging is having that voice be heard. It’s through the “Seat is Yours” breakfast series that IndyBar seeks to achieve all three, and we could use some additional volunteers to help plan future gatherings.

Started in 2021 by then IndyBar President Jimmie McMillian, these breakfasts have been a low-key avenue to introduce lawyers and law students from underrepresented groups to local lawyers, law firms and legal departments serious about communicating that their voices are valued. Our volunteers assist in planning a short presentation on an engaging topic for each session intended to spark conversation among those attending. Time prior to and after the program is for networking and learning more about the session’s host and attendees.

Volunteer planners meet virtually and/or in-person to discuss potential presenters and topics. They are also expected to attend most breakfast programs. Total volunteer time is anticipated to be less than 3 hours per quarter. The next planning meeting will be held in November. Hosts for upcoming sessions include Kids’ Voice of Indiana, Paganelli Law Group, Taft Stettinius & Hollister LLP, and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Individuals interested in volunteering for the planning group and organizations interested in hosting a future breakfast should contact IndyBar Board of Directors’ DEI Director Ranissa Dycus at [email protected].•
