The Indiana Supreme Court appointed a new member to the Indiana Commission on Court Appointed Attorneys Thursday.

Noble County Chief Public Defender James Abbs has been appointed to succeed Tippecanoe Superior Court 2 Judge Steven Meyer on the commission.

Meyer was first appointed in 2016 and then reappointed in 2021.

“The Court sincerely thanks Judge Meyer for his many years of dedicated service and commitment to improving the field of public defense in Indiana,” the high court’s order read.

Abbs’ term will end on Nov. 21, 2028.

The Indiana Supreme Court appoints three members to the commission.

The commission was created in 1989 to create standards for public defense services in Indiana Counties or Regional Systems that choose to uphold those standards in exchange for a partial reimbursement of county expenses in non-capital cases.

It also provides standards and partial reimbursement to all counties in capital cases and Federal Title 4-E Funding to all counties that request funding.

Chief Justice Loretta Rush signed the order with all justices concurring.
