Training available to prepare for new guardian ad litem requirements

New training requirements and other guidelines for Hoosiers wishing to be a court-appointed child advocate, also known as a guardian ad litem, go into effect Jan. 1.

Kids Voice Indiana is hosting a guidelines training on Dec. 18 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The comprehensive 12-hour program is designed to comply with the training requirements of the guardian ad litem guidelines recently adopted by the Indiana Supreme Court.

Registration includes seven hours of in-person training on Dec. 18, and five hours of self-paced online learning. Registrants must complete both the in-person and online components of the training to receive a certificate of completion.

For attorneys, the in-person training component has been approved for seven hours of continuing legal education credit and one hour of ethics credit.

The in-person training will be held at Kids Voice Indiana in Indianapolis at 615 N. Alabama St. Room 7.

Additionally, The Office of Guardian Ad Litem/ Court Appointed Special Advocates is hosting a webinar on Dec. 16 from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Judicial officers and guardians ad litem can attend the webinar which will be held via Zoom. For more information, email [email protected].

Anyone planning to serve as a guardian ad litem also needs to complete an application, which includes a criminal background check and child protective services check.
