An Indianapolis drug dealer was sentenced to 13 years in federal prison on various drug and gun offenses, including being in possession of a gun used to kill a man in March 2023.

In addition to his time in prison, 26-year-old Marvin Golden will serve an additional five years of supervised release after pleading guilty to possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and distribution of methamphetamine.

Golden’s drug charges and subsequent sentencing stem from October and November 2022, when Golden was caught selling methamphetamine and fentanyl in Shelby County.

His gun charge stems from his possession of a murder weapon following a crime in March 2023.

On March 25, 2023, Anthony Shelman was shot and killed while driving on I-70 in Marion County. As his car crashed into a light pole following the shooting, two nearby vehicles drove from the scene.

An investigation by Indiana State Police found that Golden and another person followed Shelman in their own vehicles as he left an Indianapolis club early that morning. The vehicles continued to follow Shelman’s vehicle before exiting I-70 at the same time shots were fired at Shelman, according to court documents.

Later that morning, Golden is seen on video extensively cleaning his car. A court-authorized search of his home turned up a .40 caliber Glock 27 handgun that was later confirmed to be the murder weapon in Shelman’s death.

DNA testing identified Golden’s DNA on multiple parts of the gun, but he was never charged with Shelman’s murder.

Because of his past offenses, which include brandishing guns while robbing pharmacies, Golden is not allowed to be in possession of a firearm.

“Anthony Shelman should be alive today, and we extend our deepest sympathies to his family and all who loved him,” said Zachary Myers, outgoing U.S. attorney for the Southern District of Indiana. “Marvin Goldman has repeatedly demonstrated that he is a violent, vicious criminal who has an utter disregard for the law. As we work to urgently reduce gun violence, investigation and federal prosecution of the most dangerous armed criminals is a top priority.”
