Stemming from a local church’s desire to meet the needs of its community, the Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic in Indianapolis has been making a difference in the lives of residents for over 30 years.

On Palm Sunday in 1992, the pastor at Tabernacle Presbyterian Church gave a sermon encouraging the church to expand its reach of support to neighbors in the city. A group of attorneys felt strongly about the message and helped develop the clinic, formerly known as the Mapleton Fall Creek Legal Clinic.

With a mission of offering free access to legal aid for the most vulnerable in the community, the Neighborhood Christian Legal Clinic currently runs several programs addressing community-specific needs, such as the Housing & Consumer Justice Program, the Veterans Justice Program, and the Immigrant & Survivor Justice Program.

Another offering provided by the clinic is its “Consult with a Lawyer” program, which offers free legal advice and counseling on legal matters through the clinic’s attorneys. Right now, the clinic employs 14 staff attorneys and 38 staff total, in addition to volunteers that help throughout the year.

Executive Director Erin Hall said the clinic is looking to expand and reach more community needs in 2025. They’re hoping to do so by welcoming more volunteers to the team and partnering with local churches to extend their message.
