McKinney School of law in Indianapolis and the IU Maurer School of Law in Bloomington are assisting rural county judges, prosecutors and public defenders this summer as part of the Rural Justice Initiative.
The initiative offers students a front-row seat to the practice of law in rural communities by working with judges. This year, a handful of IU McKinney students are also working with prosecutors or public defenders.
The effort is a partnership established in 2019 between IU Maurer and the Indiana Supreme Court. IU McKinney joined the program later that year.
Students who participate assist trial court judges with research and drafting motions and opinions, and they have the opportunity to learn about courtroom practice and procedure.
All students participating will receive a $4,000 stipend.
