More than a dozen applicants are seeking to fill a Lake County judicial vacancy created by a judge’s retirement earlier this month.

The vacancy in Lake Superior Court, Civil Division 6 was opened up when Judge John Pera retired July 1. The Indiana Supreme Court announced Pera’s retirement in June, prompting the Lake County Judicial Nominating Commission to begin seeking applicants to succeed him.

Interested candidates were required to submit their applications by noon on Monday. Among the 15 individuals who applied are:

  • Rehana R. Adat-Lopez
  • Magistrate Lisa A. Berdine
  • Carly A. Brandenburg
  • Daniel W. Burke Jr.
  • Christopher Cooper
  • Bessie M. Davis
  • Kristen D. Hill
  • Judge Gina L. Jones
  • Andrew L. Kraemer
  • Magistrate Alice Ann Kuzemka
  • Alexander Lopez
  • Frank R. Martinez III
  • Magistrate Michael N. Pagano
  • Jill S. Swope
  • Stacy J. Vasilak

The commission, led by Indiana Supreme Court Justice Geoffrey Slaughter, expects to meet in August in Crown Point to interview the applicants. An official interview date has not been announced.

Established by the Indiana General Assembly in 1973, the commission is tasked with submitting to Gov. Eric Holcomb “the three most highly qualified candidates from among all those eligible” for appointment when a vacancy arises. Holcomb will choose Pera’s successor from among those three candidates.
