The Indianapolis native practiced at Backer & Backer after working as deputy prosecutor in Marion County. He served on the Indiana State Criminal Justice Institute Juvenile Justice Task Force, Indiana Gambling Impact Commission, and Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation Board of Directors, and was a current member of the Indiana State, Indianapolis, and American bar associations.
Backer, 63, was appointed to the Indiana Lottery Commission by then-Gov. Evan Bayh, and served two terms as a member of the Indiana University Board of Trustees. Backer earned his undergraduate and law degrees from Indiana University and was active in organizations related to the school. He never missed IU home football or basketball games.
Backer is survived by his mother, Shirley Altfeld Backer; wife Susan Hedrick Backer; children Jaime Miller, Ryan, Benjamin, Andrew, and Elizabeth Backer; brothers Dr. Howard Backer and David Backer; and grandchildren Samuel and Alexander Miller.
