Mitch Daniels' administration's support for improved court technology during a speech Wednesday in Denver. Justice Sullivan addressed a plenary session at the National Court Technology Conference, which is sponsored by the National Center for State Courts.
The justice told attendees that Indiana courts exchange court information electronically with agencies through the Daniels administration in a way that increases public safety and saves taxpayers money.
"I am of the view that there is no state in this country where there is closer and more constructive collaboration on technology between the judicial and executive branches of government than we have in Indiana," he said in the speech.
Justice Sullivan explained that every traffic court in Indiana now notifies the Bureau of Motor Vehicles electronically of disposition of all traffic infractions, which enhances public safety by keeping driving records up-to-date. It also saves money by eliminating paper disposition reports by court staff and manual re-entry of data at the BMV.
Indiana courts also exchange court information electronically with the Indiana State Police, Indiana Department of Child Services, Indiana Department of Revenue, and the State Department of Health. Other agencies within the Daniels Administration – Indiana Criminal Justice Institute, Indiana Office of Technology, State Board of Accounts, and Indiana Department of Homeland Security – also have strongly supported the work of the Judicial Technology and Automation Committee.
Justice Sullivan was invited give a speech to a plenary session at the conference because of his experience leading the state's efforts in court technology projects. Justice Sullivan has chaired the Supreme Court's JTAC since its inception in 1999.
