A legislative subcommittee meeting Thursday will consider preliminary drafts of legislation to clarify Indiana law in the wake of the Indiana Supreme Court’s decision upholding that residents have no common law right to resist police entering a person’s home.

The Legislative Council Barnes v. State subcommittee will work on remedying or clarifying Indiana’s self defense and search-and-seizure laws. The justices held in their rehearing of Barnes v. State that the state’s 2006-enacted castle doctrine statute is not a defense to battery or any violence against a police officer who’s acting in his or her duties. Legislators will meet at 1 p.m. Thursday in the Senate chambers.

Also meeting this week for the first time this interim session is the Code Revision Commission, which will elect a chairman, discuss replacing “consolidated city” with “Indianapolis” in the Indiana Code, and consider legislation making statutory technical corrections. The commission meets at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in Room 233 of the Statehouse. Preliminary drafts are available online on the General Assembly's website and the meeting will be webcast.

The Criminal Code Evaluation Committee meets Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. in Room 431. The agenda for the meeting has not been released, but the meeting will be webcast.
