Subscribe NowAfter 25 years of service, Sue Hartig stepped down from her role as executive director for the Legal Aid Society of Evansville Feb. 3. Kevin Gibson is her replacement, and Hartig will continue to serve as a staff attorney until her retirement in 2013.
Beverly Corn, plan administrator for the Volunteer Lawyer Program of Southwestern Indiana, and Scott Wylie, VLP’s co-administrator and program director, reflected on Hartig’s contribution to pro bono services.
Hartig, as a board member for the VLP (also known as Pro Bono District K) was instrumental in shaping what it has become today, Corn said.
Hartig“Without her involvement, there would have been many times that it would have been easy to just walk away,” Corn said. “The commitment and dedication she has given to the Volunteer Lawyer Program of Southwestern Indiana will not be forgotten or taken for granted.”
Wylie said Hartig also had a positive influence for women in the field of law.
“Sue Hartig was among the first group of women to begin practicing in Evansville. Throughout her career, she has opened the doors of the courthouse to the less fortunate and the doors of the profession to those previously unwelcomed,” Wylie said. “She has been a pioneer in many ways and her impact has been significant.”
Susan Vollmer, executive director of the Evansville Bar Association, commented on Hartig’s efforts to connect people with pro bono aid.
“She has been and continues to be a wonderful champion for access to justice for all people,” she said. “The Evansville Bar Association is so proud to have her as a member and wishes her great happiness in her retirement.”•
