Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller announced Tuesday that he is investigating whether political phone calls are being made under the guise of the AG’s main office number.

He said he’s heard from hundreds of people around Indiana that say missed calls on their Caller ID come from 317-232-6201 and some screens display “ST OF IN AG.” The calls are a campaign polling effort on behalf of candidates for the Indiana House of Representatives and may be affiliated with the group known as “Lunch Pail Republicans.”

Anyone who has received one of these calls is asked to contact the AG’s Consumer Protection Division at 1-800-382-5516.

Federal law prohibits the practice of falsifying a telephone number and name relayed on Caller ID information to disguise one’s identity. Violators are subject to a penalty of up to $10,000 for each violation of the rules under the Truth in Caller ID Act of 2009.
