LACE Legal Director Milkah Mirugi Cheptinga and board president Eric Gumbo will speak in the Wynne Courtroom at 5 p.m. Clinical professor Fran Quigley will introduce the two.
LACE works in close association with the Indiana University affiliated Academic Model Providing Access to Healthcare program in Eldoret. Since its founding, LACE has represented more than 3,000 HIV-positive AMPATH patients in court proceedings including land and inheritance issues, gender-based violence prosecutions, and defamation cases associated with HIV status.
LACE was co-founded by Indiana Court of Appeals Judge Patricia Riley, Quigley, and their Kenyan colleagues. Local law firms have supported LACE through the annual “Race for LACE” held in conjunction with the 500 Festival Mini-Marathon in Indianapolis.
While in town, Cheptinga and Gumbo also will visit with legal and community members and learn about the U.S. legal system.
