Three Muncie police officers have been charged in connection with the use of excessive force during arrests and attempts to cover it up.

Joseph Winkle, 34, Jeremy Gibson, 30, and Joseph Krejsa, 50, were indicted Wednesday by a federal grand jury in Indianapolis, the Justice Department said Friday.

Winkle and Gibson are officers. Krejsa is a sergeant.

Winkle was charged with depriving four people of their rights to be free from excessive force and writing false reports.

Gibson was charged with depriving a man of his right to be free from excessive force. The man was stomped on and suffered knee strikes to the head, according to authorities.

Krejsa was charged with two counts of writing false reports related to two of Winkle’s excessive force incidents.
