The Lake County Prosecutor's Office wants to obtain a DNA sample from a 27-year-old man accused of killing a Gary police officer.

Carl Blount is charged with murder in the July 2014 shooting death of officer Jeffrey Westerfield. The (Munster) Times reports that the state is seeking the death penalty against Blount, who has pleaded not guilty to the murder charge.

Deputy Prosecuting Attorney David Urbanski said at a hearing Wednesday that the state believes it has enough probable cause to obtain a search warrant for the DNA sample.

An attorney for Blount said he plans to file a motion seeking to stop the state from obtaining the DNA sample.

A hearing on the DNA sample request is scheduled for Nov. 18.
