Lawyers throughout the state will donate legal services to underserved people Monday in the Indiana State Bar Association’s “Talk to a Lawyer Today” event, its 15th annual tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Walk-in events are scheduled in 21 counties, and the ISBA will offer a statewide hotline for English and Spanish speakers from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The hotline number is (800) 266-2581, and a listing of walk-in events is available here.

According to the ISBA, 25 attorneys will be staffing the phone line, and around the state, hundreds more are expected to donate pro bono service to those in need. More than 225 lawyers donated their time in 2015, when more than 520 people were assisted at walk-in events and another 345 people called the toll-free hotline.

ISBA spokeswoman Clarissa Long said Monday’s event is the only one of its kind requiring no means test for free personal consultations with attorneys.

“Scheduling this program on MLK Day is a way to commemorate his life spent serving others. And, with this being a nationally recognized holiday, more people are able to take advantage of this free service because they have the day off work,” Long said.
