The Pro Football Hall of Fame announced Thursday that it would refund the costs of tickets, parking and hotel accommodations for fans who went to the Hall of Fame preseason game between the Indianapolis Colts and Green Bay Packers on Aug. 7 in Canton, Ohio.

The Hall's decision comes after four fans filed a class-action lawsuit in federal court on behalf of all ticket holders who lost out when the game was canceled. Officials with the Pro Football Hall of Fame decided to nix the game after paint congealed and hardened on portions of the field, creating a dangerous surface for players.

“The Hall of Fame game is our event. We sincerely regret disappointing fans but we believe that cancelling the game was the right thing to do,” said Hall of fame President David Baker in a prepared release.

“We take full responsibility for what occurred at the game. We are doing what is right for our fans. We will learn from this experience so something like this never happens again,” Baker said.

The group’s reimbursement plan provides full refunds for the face value of tickets to the game and related fees; pre-paid parking purchased through the Hall of Fame; and one night of hotel accommodations to eligible fans. In addition, fans would receive tickets to future games and commemorative keepsakes.

Those who accept the reimbursement plan would agree to release all claims from the lawsuit, according to the terms of the deal.

The capacity of Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton is 22,375.
