Milt Stewart, ’71, and his wife, Judi, bequeathed $7.7 million to the center to support its activities, including global externships for law students, research and outreach activities, partnership programs with law schools across the globe and other activities for law students.
“Judi and I are delighted to make this gift to the center,” Stewart said in a statement Monday “My law school education made it possible for me to have a successful and rewarding practice in the global legal profession. This gift enables me to repay the school in some small way for the success I have had and, I hope, expose future students to the opportunities available to global lawyers.”
Milt Stewart is a retired partner in the Portland, Oregon, office of Davis Wright Tremaine, a national business and litigation law firm.
The Stewarts have supported the Center on the Global Legal Profession since 2009, so the center will be renamed in their honor to the Milt and Judi Stewart Center on the Global Legal Profession. Additionally, the center’s director will hold the Milt and Judi Stewart Professor of Law professorship once the proceeds from the estate have been distributed.
The Center on the Global Legal Profession was created in 2009 to engage in research to advance the knowledge of the global legal profession, provide students with hands-on opportunities to learn about the law in other countries and build global partnerships with other law schools around the world.
“This is an exciting time for our center,” Jayanth Krishnan, professor and director of the center, said in a statement. “We have a number of initiatives that will further our mission of promoting research on crucial issues facing lawyers, providing unparalleled opportunities for our students and expanding our global partnerships. The Stewarts’ bequest will help advance the center’s mission for years to come.”
