James Hill of Gary has pleaded not guilty. The Post-Tribune reports bail was set at $50,000. In 2012, Hill and two others were charged in Hammond officer Larry Pucalik's death, but the charges were dismissed. Hill was charged again in September.
Hill's sister-in-law Moniqueka Hardaway questions the timing. Hill filed a civil case against Hammond after DNA evidence cleared him of a 1980 robbery and rape case. Hill spent over a decade behind bars and was cleared in 2009.
Another man charged in the case won a $4.5 million wrongful conviction settlement, but Hill's suit is pending.
Hill is due in court next month.
