Indiana Legal Services Inc. has launched a pilot program in Indianapolis specifically to help individuals and families facing eviction.

The Tenant Assistance Project places two ILS staff attorneys at the Warren Township Small Claims Court, 501 N. Post Road, during the summer to provide free, on-the-spot legal assistance to renters in danger of being forced from their homes. The TAP team will be onsite every Thursday through Aug. 10 with the exception of June 29.

Attorneys will either offer brief advice or negotiate with a landlord to arrange a payment plan or a resolution that avoids an eviction judgment and gives the tenant a few days to move into other housing.

Warren Township Small Claims Judge Garland Graves is a champion of the project which is modeled after an initiative started in Bloomington. Also, the ILS lawyers are receiving help from Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law.
