A Gary attorney is being held in the Lake County Jail after she was arrested and charged with felony theft.

Indiana State Police announced Monday that Ruth A. Batey, 46, of Gary is facing a Level 5 felony theft charge after allegedly stealing $80,000 from clients. The investigation by Detective Gary Runde began in January 2017, when the Gary Police Department asked ISP to investigate Batey’s theft of monies from two Gary Police Department employees.

According to a Monday news release, Batey allegedly cashed an $80,000 check intended for her clients, but instead kept the proceeds for herself. Upon her arrest, a civil warrant for Batey was also discovered.

Batey was booked on a $20,000 bond plus an additional $500 bond on the civil warrant.

The Indiana Roll of Attorneys lists Batey’s main office at a Chicago address. The Roll of Attorneys also shows a suspension pending against Batey, with an evidentiary hearing set for October at the Lake County Superior Courthouse in Hammond. She was also included in the mass suspension of attorneys earlier this month for failing to comply with attorney registration fees and IOLTA certification requirements.
