The inmate, identified Monday as Raymond McCarty, 52, was housed alone in a medical cell, according to Sheriff Michael D. Grzegorek.
A correctional officer was unable to get a response from the inmate and entered the cell to investigate at around 1:40 p.m. Sunday.
Upon recognizing the inmate was unconscious, the officer called for help from in-house medical staff who began CPR, according to the sheriff’s office.
South Bend medics were also called to the jail to assist. None of the efforts by either jail medical staff or the medics were able to revive McCarty.
The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit is handling the investigation, as is customary for all jail deaths. An autopsy is being conducted Monday in Fort Wayne.
