Members of the Indianapolis City-County Council will hold community meetings on a breakdown in trust between police and the community.

Council President Vop Osili and six other Democratic and Republican councilors announced the meetings during a news conference Thursday, one week after a civilian police merit board cleared two policemen of wrongdoing in the fatal shooting of an unarmed black motorist. Police Chief Bryan Roach had recommended the board fire the officers.

Osili said rank-and-file officers are invited to the meetings beginning May 31, but not police leadership or city administrators.

Osili, an African-American, said Indianapolis “is now part of a national conversation about tensions between law enforcement and communities of color.”

Indianapolis Fraternal Order of Police President Rick Snyder says he supports the meetings.
