The chairman of the Indiana House Ways and Means Committee remains in critical but stable condition in Ann Arbor, Michigan, according to the House Speaker’s office.

Rep. Tim Brown, R-Crawfordsville, was injured in a motorcycle accident Wednesday morning near the Mackinac Bridge in Michigan. Brown was thrown from his motorcycle when it struck an SUV that pulled out in front of him. According to media reports, Brown was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.

Rep. Mike Speedy, R-Indianapolis, who was on a motorcycle near Brown, managed to swerve and miss the SUV. He was not injured.

Brown was in a medically induced coma after the accident and was taken to a hospital in Ann Arbor after a short stay in Mackinac Straits Health System in St. Ignace, Michigan.

Few details have been shared about Brown’s condition since then, but a spokeswoman for House Speaker Brian Bosma said Tuesday that Bosma is in regular contact with Brown’s family.

“He reported today that Dr. Brown remains in critical but stable condition at the hospital in Ann Arbor,” Erin Reece said in an email. “They family also conveyed that he has made positive progress since the accident.”

Brown, 62, has served as a representative since 1994 and is chair of the influential House Ways & Means Committee. He also oversees the interim Fiscal Policy Committee, which had been scheduled to meet Thursday. That meeting has been canceled.

Reece said she did not have any updates immediately available on how Brown’s legislative work assignments were being addressed while he’s gone.

Brown is a retired emergency room physician. He lives in Crawfordsville with his wife, Jane, and has four daughters.
