On November 1, the Indianapolis Bar Association’s Helping Enrich Attorneys’ Lives (HEAL) Committee is hosting the third annual Memorial Service — Celebration of Life and Career to honor licensed attorneys from the Indianapolis area who passed away during the past year. This event features the stories of lawyers and judges who contributed to the shared history of the Indianapolis legal community. As we remember those we lost, we have an opportunity to share with their families and with one another our stories of seeing these members of our community on days of great triumph and accomplishment as they dispensed justice from the bench, achieved justice for a client or taught and served others. We will remember serving with them at the bar association, on boards and committees and in the community. We knew them as friends. We shared their war stories.
The opportunity to share these stories with one another and to pause to remember those we have lost is an important moment for members of the legal community and for the families of the individuals who have died. However brief or long our time together on this earth with our loved ones, it is the stories about their lives that we end up cherishing the most. Undoubtedly, we will continue to tell their stories in the future to those we mentor as examples of professionalism, expertise and service.
I had the privilege of speaking at last year’s Memorial Service, and I had the chance to interact with the families of the honorees at the reception that follows the program. The attendance of the legal community and our willingness to share our stories of the honorees’ careers and lives are immeasurably appreciated by family members who attend. At last year’s event, I shared a personal story of losing a family member and how much it has meant to me over the years to interact with people who knew her and can share new details about her life. It’s the most personal and heartfelt legacy that we can give — to continue to tell the stories of those who are gone.
