The Indiana Southern District Court’s newest member, Judge James R. Sweeney, will be ceremonially sworn into office next month.

Sweeney’s investiture ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 16, at the Birch Bayh Federal Building and United States Courthouse in downtown Indianapolis.

Sweeney, an Indianapolis native and former Barnes & Thornburg partner, officially ascended to the Southern District bench on Sept. 24 when Chief Judge Jane Magnus-Stinson administered the official oath. His caseload will pull from the Indianapolis and Terre Haute divisions and will include newly assigned cases and reassigned cases from other judges in an effort to relieve the Southern District Court’s heavy caseload.

After being sworn into office last month, Stinson praised Sweeney as an “incredibly bright, hard-working, and talented attorney” and noted he comes “at a time of great need.”

“Having Judge Sweeney on board is a significant benefit to the court and to all citizens of the Southern District of Indiana,” she said in a September statement. Magnus-Stinson will also administer the ceremonial oath to Sweeney on Nov. 16.
