Carlos Gallegos-Esqueda of Hammond is suing the Lake County Sheriff’s Department and others for damages.
He alleges that Lake County Sheriff’s Officer Anibal Ramos’ actions in the June 2016 crash demonstrated a “deliberate indifference to the lives of those around him.”
The Times of Northwest Indiana reported that a police report says Ramos told officers he was chasing a possible drunken driver when the crash occurred.
Gallegos-Esqueda’s suit contends no pursuit was underway when Ramos crashed into his vehicle, leaving him with a traumatic brain injury and other injuries.
Lake County, its commissioners and Ramos have denied wrongdoing in court filings.
