The Office of the Attorney General filed a lawsuit Monday against the City of East Chicago for allegedly not complying with federal immigration laws.

“This week, my office filed a lawsuit against East Chicago because its leaders continue to operate their city as a sanctuary city, giving safe harbor to illegal aliens, against federal and state law,” Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita said in a news release.

The eight-page lawsuit was filed with the Lake Superior Court. The complaint is asking the trial court to compel the city to comply with federal immigration law. It states the city is violating Indiana Code chapter 5-2-18.2.

Rokita warned several Indiana cities of litigation if they didn’t rescind their local policies on “sanctuary cities” back in May. The other cities included Gary, West Lafayette and Monroe County.

“We have a new statute that supports the rule of law thanks to the leadership of the General Assembly and I intend to enforce it because illegal immigration is unfair to the good people of this state and those who worked hard to enter our country legally. As we continue to evaluate other local governments, this may not be the last lawsuit we file on this issue. Stay tuned.”

The case is State of Indiana ex rel. Todd Rokita, Attorney General of Indiana v. City of East Chicago Common Council, 45D10-2407-PL-000452.
