Applications are open for upcoming trial court vacancies in two Indiana counties.
Gov. Eric Holcomb is accepting applications through Oct. 30 for Wayne Superior Court 3 while the St. Joseph County Judicial Nominating Commission is accepting applications through noon on Oct. 31 for the Criminal Division of the St. Joseph Superior Court.
In Wayne County, Judge Darrin Dolehanty will retire on Jan. 31, 2024. Applications to succeed him can be submitted preferably via email to [email protected], or alternatively by hard copy to Governor’s Office, ATTN: Joseph R. Heerens, State House Room 206, 200 W. Washington St., Indianapolis, 46204.
Dolehanty was first elected to the bench in 2002 and was reelected in 2008, 2014 and 2020. He is retiring before his current term ends, which is why Holcomb will select a successor.
In St. Joseph County, Superior Judge John M. Marnocha is retiring on Feb. 1.
Candidates interested in succeeding Marnocha must submit their applications through the Indiana Courts Portal. To be eligible for the position, candidates must reside in St. Joseph County, be a U.S. citizen and be admitted to the bar.
The seven-member JNC, chaired by Indiana Supreme Court Justice Geoffrey Slaughter, will evaluate the candidates and submit the names of five finalists to the governor, who will make the final selection. St. Joseph is one of four counties that uses merit selection for its Superior Court, rather than judicial elections.
Marnocha joined the bench in 1999 and was most recently retained in November 2020 for a term that was set to expire in December 2026.
