Phillips opened Wild Geese Bookshop, located at 40 East Madison Street, in 2016 because there weren’t any local bookstores in the area. Now, the shop has flourished in the town, opening its doors to people across the community looking for their next great read, a book of new recipes, or simply a friendly face.
Though not actively practicing law, Phillips said she uses her legal knowledge and training every day in her business.
“As an attorney, I always focused on, I want to make sure that my client feels that they’ve been heard and seen and that they say what they need to say or that I am advocating for them on their behalf,” she said. “In bookselling, it’s kind of similar because you’re really trying to listen to them and make sure they feel seen and heard and that you’re helping them in their day-to-day.”
In addition to daily operations as a bookstore, Wild Geese also hosts several events around the town, partnering with businesses like the Artcraft Theater to create memorable experiences for locals and visitors. Phillips said one of her favorite parts of hosting these events is bringing the community together, something that seems to be lacking with today’s technology.
“I think we’re so much better when we’re together in real life,” she said.
