Bankruptcy filings in Indiana dipped in the 12-month period ending March 31, even as filings nationwide saw a slight increase, data from the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts show.

As of March 31, there were 8,259 bankruptcy filings in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana — a 3.1% decrease from the previous 12-month period — and 5,255 filings in the Northern District of Indiana — a 4.4% decrease.

Nationally, bankruptcy filings increased 2% for the 12-month period ending March 31, with the largest spikes coming in the Eastern District of New York (47.4%) and in the Northern District of Mississippi (47.3%).

Overall filings in the 7th Circuit were up 0.6%.

Business filings in Indiana’s Southern District dropped by about 6.7%, and nonbusiness filings went down by about 3%. In the Indiana Northern District, those filings decreased by about 20.8% and 4.2%, respectively.

Of the 110 business filings in the Southern District, a little more than a third were in Marion County. Lake and Allen counties combined to make up about half of the 57 business filings in the Northern District.

Marion County also had the largest share of nonbusiness filings in the Southern District, with about 31% of the 8,149 total. Of the 5,198 nonbusiness filings in the Northern District, Lake County had the most with 1,563, or about 30%.
