John F. Bryant, 59, was arrested Monday after he allowed officers inside his Bloomington apartment and they found the body of Heather Nanny-Cole, 50, under blankets in his living room, with multiple stab wounds on her back, police said.
A Monroe County judge approved a murder charge Tuesday against Bryant, deputy prosecutor Jeff Kehr told The Herald-Times.
Bryant, who was being held without bond in the county jail, faces a Friday initial hearing in the case. Online records do not list an attorney who could speak on his behalf.
Monroe County Coroner Joani Shields said Nanny-Cole had been dead for “a number of days.” A telephone message was left Wednesday for Shields seeking comment on her autopsy findings.
Relatives and friends told investigators they had not heard from Nanny-Cole since May 6.
Her 20-year-old son filed a missing person report Sunday with Bloomington police, telling officers he had last seen his mother 10 days earlier when she had left to go to Bryant’s apartment.
He said his mother and Bryant had been dating for a few months, and it was not unusual for her to be gone several days in a row. But he said she wasn’t answering her cellphone and her diabetes medication had been left at home.
Nanny-Cole’s body was discovered after a friend went to Bryant’s apartment Monday and found her car parked nearby. She called police after she went to Bryant’s front door to ask about her friend, but he would not allow her inside his apartment.
