Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law Dean Karen Bravo’s latest book written as part of the Slavery Past, Present, and Future project has been released.

Bravo — who is a founder and leader of the Slavery Past, Present, and Future project — served as an editor on the book, “Legacies of Slavery and Contemporary Resistance.”

The book, published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing, was released June 5.

“It is exciting and gratifying to participate in and shepherd another edited volume emerging from the Slavery Past, Present, and Future project,” Bravo said in a news release from IU McKinney.

The book explores how “slavery and the past are interconnected,” noting “there is a tension between a former time of human subjugation and the time after when the person’s captivity can still be remembered,” according to the publisher. It also argues the existence of slavery in modern forms, offers continuing evidence of man’s inhumanity to man and the resulting absence of freedom for millions of people.

“The opportunity to collaborate with and learn from scholars across several disciplines in addressing these important issues continues to be a fulfilling learning experience,” Bravo said.

The Slavery Past, Present, and Future project is an interdisciplinary initiative that brings together scholars, civic leaders and other interested parties to study human trafficking and slavery.

The seventh Slavery Past, Present, and Future global conference will take place next month in Accra, Ghana.
