The Court of Appeals of Indiana will visit Gainbridge Fieldhouse next month to host oral arguments in one of the state’s largest event venues.

The case that will be heard Sept. 11 at the home of the Indiana Pacers is Tyreontay Jackson v. State of Indiana, 22A-CR-2679.

That case began in July 2020, with a shooting that occurred at the Indiana State Fairgrounds involving Freddie Hegwood, Victor Griffin and other members of the KTG gang.

The shooting created a rivalry between members of the KTG gang and members of the IMG gang, which included Tyreontay Jackson. The two groups taunted and threatened each other by text and on social media.

In December 2020, Hegwood and Griffin were in a parked Jeep outside of a house in a Brownsburg neighborhood as children were returning home from school on the bus. A black Impala drove past, and passengers fired several rounds into the Jeep and the home beyond.

Hegwood was killed. Griffin wasn’t shot, but there were bullet holes in the hood of his sweatshirt and in the headrest of his seat.

The state charged Jackson with being an accomplice to murder and attempted murder.

At his jury trial, the Hendricks Circuit Court overruled Jackson’s hearsay objections and allowed the state to introduce into evidence text messages between various people whom the state characterized as co-conspirators, as well as rap lyrics by a co-defendant.

The jury found Jackson guilty.

Jackson now argues that there was insufficient evidence to support his convictions and that the trial court erred in admitting the text messages and rap lyrics because the state did not prove a conspiracy, so the messages and lyrics were inadmissible hearsay.

The oral argument will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 11 at Gainbridge, 125 S. Pennsylvania St. in downtown Indianapolis.

Because the oral argument will not be taking place in the Court of Appeals’ Courtroom, it will not be available for livestream, but the video will become available within a week.
